Most people who move to Southeast Asia eventually go home. Mathieu and Sébastien didn’t.

Mathieu arrived in Thailand and co-founded Isaan Mak Mak, a tailor-made travel agency, building it from the ground up over several years, learning the country region by region: working out which drivers show up on time, which guides actually know the trail, which hotels overpromise and which quietly deliver. Eventually, he stepped away to pursue his own vision, built around a wider view of the region rather than one country.

Sébastien’s route through the region looked different: a string of ventures across Southeast Asia, each one adding another layer of how the place actually works, from the way deals get done to the way relationships outlast contracts. Different starting point, same conclusion. This region rewards people who stay long enough to understand it, not people who pass through it.

At some point the two compared notes and realized they were solving the same problem from opposite ends. Belantara is what came out of putting that experience together: one network of people they’d trust with their own family’s trip, one standard for what a journey should feel like, and a shared refusal to hand a traveler’s itinerary to someone who’s never set foot on the road they’re describing.

It’s still a small team, on purpose. Every trip that leaves this office has been shaped by someone who could point to it on a map from memory.
