Leave Bangkok behind for Isaan, a region of rice fields, small towns, Khmer heritage and one of Thailand’s strongest regional food cultures. Ancient sandstone temples rise out of the countryside, often with barelyanother visitor in sight.

Travel through the countryside, stopping at local markets and communities rarely included in a first journey through Thailand — a slower, more rural rhythm shaped by rice farming and small-town life.

Continue towards the Mekong, where life is closely connected to the river and the pace becomes noticeably slower. Fishing villages, riverside markets and long stretches of countryside frame the days here — the focus is less on major sights and more on the places, food and people encountered along the way.

From eastern Thailand, head south to Koh Kood. The island combines forest, waterfalls, fishing communities and quiet beaches, with plenty of time left free to enjoy them and very little infrastructure to get in the way.
